Google Says Android Users Report 58% Fewer Scam Texts Than iOS Users

The YouGov-backed findings face scrutiny for relying on self-reported data without disclosing key sample details.

Overview

  • Google summarized a YouGov survey of more than 5,000 smartphone users in the United States, India and Brazil that compared scam-text exposure across platforms.
  • Respondents using Android reported fewer scam texts overall, with iOS users 65% more likely to say they received three or more such messages each week.
  • Pixel users reported a 96% higher likelihood of receiving no scam texts than iPhone users, while iPhone respondents were more likely to report heavy volumes and to say their device could not effectively stop mobile fraud.
  • Google highlighted commissioned evaluations, with Counterpoint Research describing AI protections across nine Android security layers versus two on iPhone, and Leviathan Security Group ranking Pixel 10 Pro highest for default anti-scam protection.
  • Google pointed to RCS-based mitigations and said it blocked more than 100 million suspicious numbers from sending messages via RCS last month.
