Google Rolls Out September Pixel Feature Drop With Material 3 Expressive

Android 16 QPR1 extends the Pixel 10 look to older devices, with Google planning a toggle for the blur effect after battery complaints.

Overview

  • The update is now rolling out to Pixel 6 through 9, Pixel Fold and 9 Pro Fold, and Pixel Tablet, with distribution continuing over the coming weeks.
  • Material 3 Expressive refreshes the interface with larger controls, new color theming, translucent “milk glass” backgrounds, and more natural animations, plus resizable Quick Settings tiles.
  • Users get lock-screen live effects for wallpapers and can start walking or cycling directions on the phone that automatically show the route on Pixel Watch.
  • Google acknowledges the real-time blur and transparency increase GPU use and can drain battery, battery saver can disable the effect, and a system-wide off switch is in development.
  • Additional Pixel Buds Pro 2 capabilities are slated for later in September, including Adaptive Audio, loud sound protection, Gemini conversations, and head-gesture call controls, while the status of Live Updates in this drop remains unclear.
