Overview

  • Preferred Sources, tested in Search Labs in June, is now rolling out to English-language users in the U.S. and India.
  • Users tap the star icon beside Top Stories to add unlimited favorite outlets that then appear more often or in a new “From your sources” section when they publish relevant content.
  • All selections made during the Labs experiment automatically carry over, and users can add, remove or manage their preferred outlets at any time.
  • Google has released help-center resources and a “call to action” button so publishers can guide readers to add their sites as preferred sources.
  • Analysts caution that letting users prioritize only chosen outlets may deepen filter bubbles despite Google’s assurance that Top Stories will still feature diverse perspectives.
