Google Rolls Out Gemini Labs on the Web as Per-Chat Personalization Toggle Arrives

Google corrals experimental Gemini capabilities under a Labs label to signal work-in-progress features, giving users per-chat control over Personal Intelligence.

Overview

  • Google added a Labs section to the Gemini web app’s Tools menu that groups experimental features under a beaker badge to distinguish them from stable tools.
  • The new “Personalize chat when helpful” control lets users decide whether Gemini draws on Connected Apps for a specific conversation, and it resets with each new chat.
  • The Labs interface and per-chat control are currently visible only on the web in select regions, with no change yet on mobile clients.
  • Decompiled strings from the latest Google app beta point to a developing “screen automation” feature, codenamed bonobo, that could let Gemini place orders or book rides in certain Android apps.
  • Beta strings caution that screenshots may be reviewed if Keep Activity is on and advise avoiding logins or payments in chats, with users instructed to supervise tasks since Gemini can make mistakes.
