Google Rolls Out Gemini for Home, Replacing Assistant Across Nest Speakers and Displays

An opt-in release starts this month, with paid tiers gating AI features as new 2K HDR Nest cameras go on sale.

Overview

  • Gemini becomes the default voice assistant on Google’s smart speakers and displays, bringing context-aware conversations, chained commands, and more natural media and household control using the same “Hey Google” wake word.
  • Early Access is available by opt-in through the Google Home app with a gradual October rollout, and Gemini Live’s continuous conversation mode arrives only on newer speakers and displays.
  • Google launched a Nest Cam Indoor ($100), Nest Cam Outdoor ($150), and Nest Doorbell ($180) with 2K HDR, wider fields of view, improved low-light performance, encrypted video, and six hours of included event history; the doorbell ships in the U.S. and Canada.
  • Google Home Premium introduces two paid tiers: Standard at $10 per month with Gemini Live and 30-day event history, and Advanced at $20 per month adding Ask Home video search, AI notifications and descriptions, Home Brief summaries, 60-day clips, and 24/7 video history.
  • A Walmart partnership brings onn-branded wired indoor cameras (~$23) and video doorbells (~$50) that integrate with the Google Home app, with Gemini-powered features available through a subscription.
