Google Rolls Out DeepMind’s WeatherNext 2 to Pixel Weather With Hourly Forecasts and 8x Speed

Built on DeepMind’s FGN approach, the model simulates hundreds of scenarios on TPUs, with broader rollout to Search, Gemini, then Maps.

Overview

  • Google has begun upgrading Pixel Weather to the new AI system, saying it delivers better results for 99.9% of variables across the next 0–15 days.
  • WeatherNext 2 provides hourly-resolution forecasts up to two weeks for temperature, pressure and wind.
  • DeepMind reports that each forecast scenario runs in about one minute on a single TPU using its Functional Generative Network method.
  • The model was used during this year’s North Atlantic hurricane season and now extends tropical cyclone track prediction to three days.
  • Outputs are starting to appear in Google Search and Gemini, with Google Maps slated to add richer in‑app weather data, though timing and interface details are not yet specified.
