Google Rolls Out Customizable Calling Cards in Phone and Contacts Apps

This staged beta release lets some Android users personalize contact appearances on incoming calls with images, styled text before Google expands access.

Overview

  • Google has begun a limited rollout of calling cards for beta testers in Contacts 4.61 and Phone by Google 188.
  • The feature allows fullscreen incoming-call backgrounds sourced from the camera, gallery or Google Photos.
  • Users can choose fonts and colors for displayed contact names and optionally sync calling cards as profile photos across their Google account.
  • Within the Phone app, the feature is internally codenamed “patrick” and ties into new single-tap and horizontal-swipe gestures for answering calls.
  • Unlike Apple’s Contact Posters, Google’s calling cards focus on customizing how contacts appear on the viewer’s device rather than outgoing caller identity.
