Google Rolls Out Custom AI Gems in Workspace Apps

A phased rollout that began on July 2 will deliver out-of-the-box Gems plus user-defined AI assistants to paid individual as well as enterprise Workspace subscribers within a 15-day window.

Overview

  • Gems are accessible directly in the Gemini side panel of Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive and Gmail for paid Workspace users without leaving their documents or inboxes.
  • Out-of-the-box Gems include a writing editor, brainstormer and sales pitch ideator to provide instant feedback, inspiration and client-ready pitches.
  • The “Create a new Gem” button lets users configure custom AI assistants by setting roles and instructions once for consistent reuse across all Workspace apps.
  • Gems can process text, files and images as inputs to tailor their responses and insert results seamlessly into the active document, spreadsheet, slide or email.
  • The expansion follows the August 2024 standalone release and is limited to paid individual and enterprise subscribers, with full availability expected over the next 15 days.
