Overview

  • In July 2024, Google announced that all goo.gl URLs would return 404 errors on August 25, 2025, citing a sharp decline in traffic.
  • Starting in summer 2024, interstitial warnings began appearing on links that showed no activity in late 2024.
  • On August 1, 2025, the company updated its shutdown plan to indefinitely maintain links that are still being accessed.
  • Links flagged as inactive—which account for more than 99 percent of goo.gl URLs—will cease functioning after the August 25 deadline.
  • Digital preservationists from the Internet Archive, ArchiveTeam and other initiatives are racing to catalog and archive goo.gl links before they are deactivated.
