Google Renames NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook

Tying the research app to Gemini, Google adds a per-notebook secure cloud compute that can run native code for deeper, source‑grounded analysis.

Overview

  • Google announced Thursday that NotebookLM is now called Gemini Notebook and that the change pairs the standalone research tool more closely with the Gemini brand.
  • Every notebook will get a secure cloud computer that lets the app write and execute code natively, a capability Google says is already available to AI Ultra subscribers and eligible Workspace business customers.
  • The Gemini 3.5 engine upgrade and Google’s Antigravity execution environment that began on Ultra are scheduled to roll out to Pro users on the web over the coming weeks.
  • Notebooks already sync with the Gemini app for cross‑device access and Google says the product will be available inside Search’s AI Mode soon to surface notebooks during searches.
  • Google says the tool has more than 30 million users and 600,000 organizations, a growth that boosts research and teaching workflows but also raises concerns about convincing code output, hidden errors in automated analyses, and the need for stronger AI literacy.
