Overview
- Google will supply a built-in contact editor for apps that only need to add or edit a few contacts so those apps no longer need the broad WRITE_CONTACTS permission.
- Wide-ranging contact edits will move to a new MANAGE_CONTACTS permission that users must enable manually in Settings > Apps > Special app access > Manage contacts.
- The MANAGE_CONTACTS component is slated to arrive with Android 17 QPR2 later in 2026 while the full contact-editor and permission rework are targeted for Android 18 in 2027.
- Google says the change aims to shrink the attack surface created by WRITE_CONTACTS, which today lets apps make widespread background changes to all device contacts.
- The update preserves functionality for apps that truly need bulk access, such as dialers and spam blockers, and was first detailed on the Android Developers Blog and highlighted publicly by Mishaal Rahman.
