Google Reaffirms Commitment to Smart Displays as Nest Hub Remains Unannounced

A Google Home executive says Gemini’s capabilities align with screen-based devices.

Overview

  • Google Home chief Anish Kattukaran told The Verge the company is “definitely committed to smart displays” and said users should expect future news.
  • Kattukaran said there is nothing to announce now and did not explicitly confirm that a new Nest Hub is in development.
  • Google’s latest hardware push added a Nest Cam, a Nest Doorbell, and a Gemini-powered Google Home speaker, but no new Nest Hub appeared.
  • Kattukaran described smart displays as well suited to Gemini for Home because a screen complements voice interaction and helps visualize information.
  • Existing Nest Hub models are slated to gain Gemini integration, while the line has not seen new hardware since releases in 2018 and 2021, with the Pixel Tablet’s docked smart-display approach no longer continuing.
