Google Raises Link Visibility in AI Search With Higher Inline Links and New Source Features

The company says the updates will make sources easier to find and click and will test new official-site and creator-profile displays to change how users discover publishers.

Overview

  • Google announced five changes to AI Mode and AI Overviews that move inline links higher in more AI-generated responses to increase source visibility.
  • The company is testing a top-of-response section that will list one or two official sites for task-based queries and explain why each link is a good resource.
  • Carousels for timely articles that surface a user’s Preferred Sources are expanding to more locations and languages and Google says Preferred Sources usage has grown more than sevenfold year-to-date.
  • Google has begun testing clickable creator and publisher names in AI Mode video results that link to Search profiles and is also adding image thumbnails and a more clickable design to related-article links at the end of some responses.
  • Many elements are rolling out now while others remain in limited tests with no firm timelines, and publishers must opt into Search generative AI features via Search Console to qualify as Preferred Sources.
