Google Promotes Nano Banana 2.1 but Developer Access and Pricing Remain Unclear

Developers cannot call or budget for the model until it appears in Google’s official developer tools.

Overview

  • Google publicly promoted Nano Banana 2.1 on October 6 through a company post and press reports that described a product rollout across Gemini apps and Google services.
  • Google supplied test results that say 2.1 improves visual design, mask-based editing, subject consistency and preference scores versus prior Nano Banana variants.
  • Users briefly saw a Nano Banana 2.1 entry in Google Flow that was pulled and checks of AI Studio, the Gemini API model list, and Google's pricing documentation did not show a live, documented listing.
  • Some outlets reported developer API prices roughly half those of Nano Banana 2, but those rates are not reflected in Google’s published pricing and therefore remain unverified for builders.
  • For now developers should plan around the documented Nano Banana 2, Nano Banana 2 Lite, and Nano Banana Pro models because a model must appear in AI Studio, the Gemini API list, and pricing docs before it can be called or relied on, and confirmation would lower image-generation costs for apps and ad products if fully rolled out.
