Google Photos Will Delete Newly Trashed Items After 30 Days

The shorter recovery window raises the chance of permanent loss for accidentally deleted photos and will require users to act faster.

Overview

  • Google confirmed on Nov. 5 that starting Dec. 5, 2026 any photo or video moved to the Google Photos bin will be permanently deleted after 30 days.
  • Items already in the bin before Dec. 5 will remain on the existing 60-day schedule and are not affected by the change.
  • An APK teardown reported by Android Authority shows Google Photos is developing an Ask Photos 'Add to calendar' option that can scan posters to auto-fill event name, date, time, description and include a link to the original image, but Google has not announced the feature.
  • Tests reported by Android Authority found the Add to calendar prototype asks for calendar access and can prompt users later if they decline, and it showed a timezone error that applied a US time zone to a poster that did not specify one.
  • The retention change will likely push users to check their bin more often or keep separate backups, and the calendar tool illustrates how Google is building image-to-data automation while raising new permission and accuracy questions.
