Google Photos Adds Shimmer Toggle, AI Camera Shortcut and Partial Settings Refresh

Users gain the option to turn off a glowing outline to reduce clutter, a camera button inside AI templates to capture new inputs, a staged Material 3 refresh for Settings.

Overview

  • The three interface changes were observed in Google Photos version 7.85 for Android and are being enabled gradually so availability varies across accounts and devices.
  • A new 'Show shimmer' on/off toggle appears in the Photos view and Settings > Preferences and removes only the glowing outline that highlights actionable people or objects while keeping editing and AI functions intact.
  • A large floating camera button now appears inside AI creation flows such as Remix and Photo to video so users can take a quick photo and send it directly to the template without leaving the tool.
  • Google has applied a Material 3 Expressive redesign to some Settings pages — including the main page, Backup, and Preferences — while other sections like Notifications and Sharing remain on the older layout during a piecemeal rollout.
  • For users this means less visual clutter and faster AI workflows, but they may need to update via the Play Store and wait for server-side enablement before all features appear on their device.
