Google has laid off between 40 and 45 employees from its News division, marking another instance of job cuts within the company this year.
These layoffs come in the backdrop of the ongoing misinformation crisis. The News division of Google plays a significant role in spreading verified information through its news aggregator service.
Despite the layoff, a Google spokesperson confirmed that the company remains committed to maintaining a strong information ecosystem and assured that the internal changes will not affect Google's effort against misinformation.
This year, Google undertook considerable cost-cutting measures, including mass layoffs that affected about 6% of the full-time workforce, and downsizing in other divisions such as Verily and Waymo.
Staff members at Google News expressed disappointment over the decision, stating that the employees let go were among the most talented and dedicated.
Lawmakers and industry chiefs worldwide have urged tech platforms like Google to take stronger action against the spread of false information, accentuating the crucial role of this company division, which has now been reduced.
