Google Messages Expands On-Device Nudity Blur Warnings on Android

On-device classification protects user data with default blur settings based on account age

Overview

  • The feature has moved out of beta into the stable Google Messages and Play services releases, rolling out broadly to Android users today
  • Android System SafetyCore powers local detection and blurring of images containing nudity without sending identifiable data or results to Google servers
  • Users must be signed in to a Google Account in Messages for the blur warnings to function and account age dictates defaults—mandatory for supervised children, optional for teens, and opt-in for adults
  • Blurred images prompt recipients with options to learn about risks, block the sender, delete without viewing, or confirm to view, and senders receive an extra confirmation step before sharing nude photos
  • Google cautions that detection is imperfect and currently excludes videos, and privacy advocates continue to press for greater transparency around the underlying SafetyCore models
