Overview
- Testing and wider availability reported on June 4 show Google is expanding Google Meet access on Android Auto after an initial mid-April hint that did not reach many users.
- The in-car experience is audio-only so video feeds and camera controls are disabled and the app switches the phone to an enlarged, simplified “On-the-go” mode to reduce distraction.
- First-time setup requires opening and restarting the Google Meet app on the phone before Android Auto will connect reliably and the feature depends on compatible app and Android Auto versions.
- The Android Auto UI exposes Scheduled and History tabs with basic mute, Bluetooth switch, and end-call buttons while features like raise-hand are removed and instant meeting links only appear in the Scheduled tab.
- Reporters tested the rollout on Google Meet v361.0.92 and Android Auto v16.8 and did not see Google Workspace access warnings, which suggests the rollout is broad but intentionally limited in functionality for safety.
