Google Maps Unveils Bluetooth-Beacon Navigation Toggle for Android Tunnels
Android users can now bypass GPS dropouts in tunnels by tapping into beacon signals with a manual setting that Google is considering rolling out to stations, airports and malls.
Overview
- The “Bluetooth-Beacons for Tunnel” option was added to Android navigation settings on July 8 and activates automatically in equipped tunnels.
- The feature leverages Bluetooth beacons installed by Waze to deliver precise underground positioning where satellite signals fail under rivers or in enclosed passages.
- Once enabled, users need not adjust settings again; beacon positioning engages whenever they enter a compatible tunnel.
- The tunnel-beacon toggle remains exclusive to Android, as iPhone users currently lack the menu option in Google Maps.
- Google is evaluating the use of beacon-based navigation in other GPS-challenged indoor venues, including train stations, airports and shopping centers.
