Overview
- The metric is now generally available in Android Vitals, with reduced discovery placement and possible store listing warnings beginning March 1, 2026.
- A session is excessive if an app holds more than 2 cumulative hours of non-exempt partial wake locks within 24 hours, and an app crosses the bad-behavior bar if at least 5% of sessions over 28 days are excessive.
- System-held wake locks that deliver clear user benefits, such as audio playback or user-initiated data transfers, are exempt from the calculation.
- Android Vitals adds a wake lock names table showing P90/P99 durations and advises investigation of tags with P90 or P99 above 60 minutes.
- Co-developed with Samsung and refined via developer feedback, the metric joins Play’s core technical quality signals alongside crash rate, ANR rate, and excessive battery usage.
