Google Makes Markdown a First-Class File Type in Drive and Docs

This lets users open, edit, comment on, and collaborate on .md files while enabling AI agents to work with those files directly.

Overview

  • Google began rolling out native Markdown support on October 5, 2026, with the feature enabled by default and expected to reach all accounts within about 15 days.
  • Drive now shows rendered previews of .md files with clickable links and tables, and Docs opens .md files for live editing, commenting, and real-time collaboration without converting the file to a Google Doc.
  • Google says the change responds to Markdown’s widespread use for specs, readmes, task lists, and AI outputs and that it lets AI agents such as Gemini Notebook interact with files without translation steps.
  • The native handling aims to remove friction from workflows by avoiding import/export loops and broken formatting, so teams keep comments and versioning where they already work.
  • Questions remain about whether Google will extend the same native parity to Sheets and Slides and how users concerned about data privacy will weigh Workspace’s AI integrations against encrypted alternatives like Proton.
