Google Makes K-12 AI Tools Opt-In and Ties Search to Those Settings

The change forces school leaders to choose between allowing Google’s classroom AI or removing Google Search for student accounts.

Overview

  • Google announced on Tuesday that it will disable Gemini, NotebookLM and related AI features by default for K-12 student accounts and require school administrators to opt in to enable them.
  • Google says its AI features are deeply integrated into Google Search so that turning off AI for student accounts will also remove Search access and there will be no option to keep classic Search while disabling AI summaries.
  • When schools enable AI for students, Gemini will run in Guided Learning mode that prompts students through problems instead of giving direct answers and students cannot switch from Guided Learning back to regular Gemini within Classroom.
  • The move follows several large U.S. districts that already restricted generative AI and warnings from groups like Common Sense Media that Google’s AI overviews and Gemini K-12 can produce age-inappropriate output, complete assignments, and blur help with finished work.
  • Google will begin testing the opt-in changes with a small set of U.S. schools immediately and plans a wider rollout in early 2027, leaving administrators to weigh classroom pedagogy, equity of internet access, and the limits of controls given student access to other AI on personal devices.
