Google Limits Gemini Model Access for Free and Plus Users

Google says the change is meant to curb compute costs and push more users toward paid plans.

Overview

  • Google updated its support documents to restrict model access and says changes for non‑subscribers will take effect on October 9, 2026.
  • Users without a Google AI subscription will be limited to the Flash‑Lite (3.5) model and will lose access to Flash (3.6) and Pro (3.1).
  • AI Plus subscribers will retain Flash‑Lite and Flash but will lose Pro access and will receive an email with the timing for their accounts.
  • AI Pro and AI Ultra members keep access to Flash‑Lite, Flash and Pro, and AI Pro will gain the Deep Think option for heavier parallel reasoning.
  • The Gemini app will add low, medium and high effort settings that increase answer depth at the cost of using more of a user’s usage allowance and create a clearer paywall between light and power users.
