Google Launches Universal Commerce Protocol to Bring Checkout to AI Mode and Gemini

Co-development with Shopify, Etsy, Target and Wayfair signals broad retailer buy-in.

  • UCP will power a new checkout on Google’s AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app, letting shoppers buy from eligible U.S. retailers using Google Pay details saved in Google Wallet, with PayPal support planned.
  • Retailers remain the seller of record and can customize the integration across discovery, purchase and post‑purchase support.
  • Business Agent, a branded chat experience in Search, begins rolling out January 12 with partners including Lowe’s, Michaels, Poshmark and Reebok.
  • Google is piloting Direct Offers in AI Mode so advertisers can present exclusive discounts to shoppers ready to purchase.
  • UCP is compatible with A2A, AP2 and MCP, has endorsements from payments and retail partners such as Adyen, American Express, Mastercard, Stripe and Visa, and will expand globally with added features after the initial U.S. launch.
