Google Launches Universal Commerce Protocol, Bringing Native Checkout to AI Search and Gemini

Google positions the retailer‑controlled, interoperable standard as the underpinning for agent‑driven shopping across its AI surfaces.

Overview

  • UCP will power a new checkout flow on AI Mode in Search and in the Gemini app for eligible U.S. retailers, using Google Pay and saved Wallet details now with PayPal support planned soon.
  • Business Agent, a branded chat experience in Search, begins rolling out with partners including Lowe’s, Michaels, Poshmark and Reebok, with future options for retailer data training, related offers and in‑chat purchases.
  • Google is piloting Direct Offers in AI Mode to surface exclusive discounts to high‑intent shoppers, with early collaborators such as Petco, e.l.f. Cosmetics, Samsonite, Rugs USA and Shopify merchants.
  • The protocol was co‑developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart and has endorsements from payment networks and retailers including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Stripe, Adyen, Best Buy, Macy’s, The Home Depot and Zalando.
  • Retailers remain the merchant of record and can customize integrations, with UCP designed to work alongside AP2, Agent2Agent and MCP and slated for global expansion and features like loyalty and related‑product discovery in the coming months.
