Google Launches Open Agent Payments Protocol Backed by 60+ Industry Partners

AP2 introduces cryptographic Mandates to make agent-driven payments auditable.

Overview

  • The protocol enables AI agents to initiate and complete transactions across credit and debit cards, real-time bank transfers and stablecoins, with a crypto x402 extension co-developed with Coinbase, the Ethereum Foundation and MetaMask.
  • Google published the full AP2 technical specification with documentation and reference implementations on a public GitHub repository.
  • AP2’s Mandates model captures user intent via an Intent Mandate and final approval via a Cart Mandate, including delegated rules for automated purchases, creating a non-repudiable authorization trail.
  • More than 60 organizations support the launch, including Mastercard, American Express, PayPal, Salesforce, Etsy, Worldpay, Accenture, Adobe, Okta and 1Password.
  • Google positions AP2 as an open, interoperable standard that extends its Agent2Agent framework and works with MCP, with the near-term focus on standards work, developer adoption and security and fraud mitigation in real-world pilots.
