Google Launches GenChess, an AI-Powered Chess Customization Tool

The experimental platform uses Google Gemini’s Imagen 3 to let users design unique chess pieces and play against an AI opponent.

GenChess, developed by Google Labs, allows users to create custom chess pieces using text prompts powered by the Imagen 3 AI model.
The tool offers two design styles: 'Classic' for traditional chess aesthetics and 'Creative' for more abstract, artistic designs.
Players can refine individual pieces, generate an opponent's set, and play chess with adjustable difficulty levels and timer options.
The launch coincides with Google's sponsorship of the 2024 World Chess Championship and a broader initiative to merge AI, design, and chess.
Additional chess-related features, including a conversational chess bot within the Gemini app, are set to debut next month for Gemini Advanced subscribers.
