Google Japan Open-Sources Gboard ‘Dial Version,’ a Rotary-Inspired DIY Keyboard

The non-commercial concept invites makers to build rotary input hardware from complete design files published on GitHub.

Overview

  • The design replaces keys with nine rotating dials of varying sizes, including a large dial dedicated to the Return key.
  • Modern sensors translate each dial’s rotation into USB input, reimagining rotary phone mechanics for typing.
  • Letters sit under finger holes on the main dials, with separate mini dials for numbers, navigation, functions, punctuation and modifiers.
  • Google provides 3D-printable models, PCB designs, firmware and build documentation for DIY assembly via GitHub.
  • The project is not for sale, and an optional companion stand can cut a webcam feed when a mouse is placed on it.
