Google Extends Personal Intelligence to Search AI Mode Using Gmail and Photos

The opt-in Labs rollout targets AI Pro/Ultra subscribers in the U.S., with Gemini 3 drawing on personal context but not training on inboxes or photo libraries.

Overview

  • Personal Intelligence in AI Mode is rolling out over the next few days in English to eligible U.S. personal accounts, excluding Workspace business, enterprise and education users.
  • When enabled, AI Mode can reference Gmail messages and Google Photos to tailor results for tasks like trip planning and shopping, using details such as bookings, past purchases and travel memories.
  • Google says connections are optional and can be turned off at any time, and Gemini 3 does not train on Gmail or Photos content, limiting training to specific prompts and model responses.
  • Users can enable the feature via Search > profile > Search personalization > Connected Content Apps, then connect Gmail and Google Photos; a prompt may also appear in AI Mode during rollout.
  • In this Search release, connections are limited to Gmail and Photos, and early testing has surfaced accuracy and context-matching errors that Google flags and invites feedback on with follow-ups or a thumbs down.
