Google Expands Quick Share–AirDrop Support and Launches QR Code Sharing

The move cuts daily AndroidiPhone sharing hassles by combining direct transfers on supported phones with a simple cloud fallback for every device.

Overview

  • Google said Tuesday at The Android Show that AirDrop compatibility through Quick Share will reach devices from Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi and Honor later this year.
  • Any Android phone can now generate a QR code in Quick Share to send files to an iPhone via the cloud, with the rollout starting today and completing within a month.
  • Peer‑to‑peer transfers may stay confined to higher‑end models because Apple’s AWDL wireless tech requires chipset‑level support that many mid‑range phones lack.
  • Google and Apple worked on a new wireless iOS‑to‑Android migration that moves passwords, photos, messages, apps, contacts, home screen layout and eSIMs, arriving first on Galaxy and Pixel this year.
  • Google is also rolling out end‑to‑end encryption for RCS chats across Android and iOS to protect messages during delivery.
