Overview
- In mid-September 2026 Google broadened Motion Assist from Pixel-only to additional Android 17 devices, with reports saying the rollout reached some Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 units after Play services updates.
- Motion Assist overlays small moving bubbles at the screen edges that use the phone’s accelerometer and gyroscope to match turns, acceleration and braking so the visual cues line up with what the inner ear senses.
- Google ships the feature through Google Play services rather than a full OS update, so availability depends on both the device running Android 17 and having the latest Play services version (some users saw it with Play services ~26.33.32).
- Users can turn it on from Settings (Google > All services > Personal & device safety > Motion Assist) or add a Quick Settings tile, and they can set the bubbles to auto-start when a vehicle is detected.
- The feature includes color, shape, opacity and randomization controls, but Google warns a small share of users may feel worse using it, and development earlier stalled while engineers fixed system-surface rendering limits so the overlay can appear across the interface.
