Google Expands Android XR With Galaxy XR Updates, Project Aura Preview, and 2026 AI Glasses

Google is unifying XR around one Android platform with Gemini at the core.

Overview

  • Samsung’s Galaxy XR begins receiving new features, including PC Connect (beta) for Windows integration, Travel Mode for tight spaces, and Likeness avatars starting December 8.
  • Google released Developer Preview 3 of the Android XR SDK to let developers build experiences for AI glasses and wired XR devices.
  • Project Aura, built with Xreal, is a wired XR glasses prototype with a 70‑degree field of view and a tethered compute puck that runs existing Galaxy XR apps without rewrites.
  • Google outlined two AI glasses tracks for 2026: a screen‑free audio/camera model and a display version that surfaces private visual prompts like navigation and translations.
  • Next year’s Android XR glasses will support Gemini experiences on iOS via Google’s apps, though third‑party app support on iPhone remains limited and pricing details are not yet disclosed.
