Google Enforces New Android Sideloading Verification in Four Countries

Google frames the multi-step developer verification flow as a scam-prevention measure with a planned global rollout in 2027.

Overview

  • Certified Android devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand now block installs of unverified APKs by default through a new developer verification flow.
  • The flow forces users to enable Developer Options, authenticate, restart the device, wait 24 hours, and then choose whether to allow sideloading for seven days or indefinitely.
  • The rule affects apps delivered outside Google Play, including projects on GitHub and F‑Droid and community-patched APKs that change an app’s signing key, which the system treats as unverified.
  • Users and developers have already found multiple workarounds, including Google’s multi-step Advanced Flow, ADB commands, the Shizuku tool, rooting, and custom ROMs such as LineageOS or GrapheneOS.
  • Google says the change is meant to disrupt scam-driven installs, but the added friction for alternate app distribution could steer developers and users toward approved app stores and reshape Android’s openness over time.
