Google Drive and Docs Add Native Markdown Support

Google says the change cuts file-conversion errors to enable direct collaboration with AI agents.

Overview

  • Google began rolling out native support for Markdown (.md) files on October 5, allowing Drive to render previews and Docs to open, edit, comment on, and collaborate on .md files without converting them.
  • The rollout is enabled by default for Google Workspace and personal accounts and can take up to 15 days to reach all users as Google deploys the update in waves.
  • Native handling preserves the .md file type while showing formatted content such as clickable links and structured tables and keeps Docs’ real-time editing and commenting features intact.
  • Google says the move responds to Markdown’s growing role as a common language for humans and AI agents and it should make AI workflows and Gemini Notebook syncs smoother.
  • The change is meant to reduce import-export friction for developer and team workflows, but observers will test editing fidelity on complex content and watch whether Google extends this support to Sheets and Slides; privacy-focused rivals such as Proton offer encrypted alternatives for users who need end-to-end encryption.
