Google Delays Replacing Assistant With Gemini on Android to 2026

Google says it needs more time to ensure a seamless switch.

Overview

  • Google confirmed it will keep upgrading Assistant users on mobile devices into 2026 after previously targeting the end of 2025.
  • Once the transition is finished, compatible devices will lose access to Google Assistant and the Assistant app will no longer be downloadable.
  • Google says it will provide more details in the coming months, and reporting points to a March 2026 transition for Android Auto.
  • Gemini is already available on Wear OS and is rolling out to Google TV and Android Auto, with a Home early access program for speakers and displays.
  • Upgrade eligibility depends on device capability, with reports citing at least Android 10 and 2GB of RAM, and Gemini now supports calls, timers, and messages without enabling Apps Activity.
