Google Commits €5.5 Billion to German Data Centers in Frankfurt Region

The investment highlights Germany's push to expand AI computing despite warnings of a widening gap with the US and China.

Overview

  • Google will build a new data center in Dietzenbach, expand its Hanau site, and grow offices in Munich, Frankfurt and Berlin under a 2026–2029 program.
  • The company extended its Engie partnership through 2030 and targets operating in Germany with about 85% carbon‑free energy in 2026.
  • Waste heat from the Dietzenbach facility will feed the local district network via Energieversorgung Offenbach, with potential to supply more than 2,000 households.
  • Google says the program will secure roughly 9,000 jobs annually through 2029, with officials hailing the plan as a boost for AI and cloud capacity centered on the DE‑CIX hub.
  • Bitkom reports Germany has about 3,000 MW of data‑center capacity in 2025 and 21.3 TWh power use, projecting more than 5,000 MW by 2030 and a quadrupling of AI capacity, while urging faster permits and cheaper clean power.
