Google Chrome to Drop Support for Android 8 and 9 on August 5

The decision will leave over 300 million devices without future security patches unless users upgrade to Android 10 or choose an alternative browser.

Google Chrome will stop updating older Android versions

Overview

  • Chrome 139, set for August 5 release, will require Android 10.0 or later and make Chrome 138 the final update for Android 8.0 (Oreo) and 9.0 (Pie).
  • Android 8.0 and 9.0 account for roughly 4% and 5.8% of the 3.3 billion-strong Android ecosystem, equating to more than 300 million affected devices.
  • Existing installations of Chrome on Oreo and Pie will continue to function but will no longer receive security patches or feature updates.
  • Google has published step-by-step guidance for users to verify their Android version, upgrade to a supported OS or switch to other browsers if updates aren’t possible.
  • The phase-out mirrors a broader industry push to retire legacy platforms in order to focus development resources and bolster overall security.
