Overview
- The Gemini app launched on Thursday, Sept. 10 and is available globally for Windows 10 and 11 as a native download from gemini.google/desktop.
- Users can summon Gemini instantly with the Alt + Space shortcut to open a floating overlay on top of whatever they are working on and get quick answers or editing help.
- The Windows client includes Gemini Spark, a persistent personal AI agent, a workspace that can pull content from Gmail and Google Drive to draft summaries and multi-step tasks, and built-in image and video generation tools called Nano Banana and Gemini Omni.
- Early hands-on reviews found the initial release limits practical automation: the app could not perform actions such as deleting emails or sorting Drive files and some Spark features seemed gated or absent, and Google said it will roll out deeper native desktop capabilities over time.
- The release follows Google’s macOS app and an April desktop search effort and gives Google a browser-independent way to reach Windows users, which could shift how people access AI assistants on the desktop even as full Workspace automation is not yet available.
