Google Brings Ask Gemini and AI Overviews to Android and iOS Drive

The mobile update uses Gemini to deliver conversational search with instant multi-file summaries under Drive’s existing access controls, including DLP and IRM.

Overview

  • Google confirmed Tuesday that Ask Gemini and AI Overviews are rolling out to Drive on Android and iOS after their web launch earlier this year.
  • Ask Gemini appears as a button beside the search bar and opens a full-screen chat that supports multi-turn conversations, persistent history, and adding files for context.
  • AI Overviews surface instant summaries at the top of Drive search results and can combine information from multiple files so users do not need to open each document.
  • Google says the features run inside Drive’s architecture, do not copy files, honor access permissions and enterprise controls such as data loss prevention and information rights management, and let admins limit which Workspace apps Gemini may search.
  • The rollout will reach Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers and select Workspace Business, Enterprise, and Education tiers in English plus 28 other languages over the next several weeks, so free accounts will not get immediate access.
