Google Begins Rolling Out Option to Change Gmail Addresses Without Creating New Accounts

The update keeps the original address as a permanent alias and preserves existing emails, photos, and files.

Overview

  • Google says the feature is rolling out gradually, so the option will not appear for all users right away.
  • Users will be able to change their @gmail.com address via My Account under Personal info → Email → Change Google Account email.
  • The change is limited to once every 12 months with a maximum of three changes per account, and the new address cannot be deleted or replaced for one year.
  • The original Gmail address remains linked to the account for login and email delivery and cannot be claimed by anyone else.
  • Reporters and security experts warn that third‑party logins using Sign in with Google may require reauthorization and that users should use only the official My Account flow to avoid phishing.
