Overview

  • The 14,800 km Humboldt Cable will connect Valparaíso with Sydney via French Polynesia to establish Chile as a Pacific digital hub.
  • Project costs are estimated at $300 million to $550 million with a $25 million contribution from Chile and open access for other users.
  • Next steps include laying the submarine cable, appointing a telecommunications operator and building landing stations along Chile’s coast.
  • Officials project the cable will draw investment from technology, mining and banking firms in Chile, Australia and neighboring markets.
  • The agreement highlights intensifying US–China rivalry over digital infrastructure influence in Latin America.
