Google Advances Android XR With New SDK, Galaxy XR Updates and a Path to AI Glasses in 2026

Google bets that broad Android app compatibility plus Gemini will make partner-built glasses viable.

Overview

  • Android XR SDK Developer Preview 3 is out today with Jetpack Projected, Jetpack Compose Glimmer, an AI Glasses emulator, and ARCore motion and geospatial features for augmented experiences.
  • Samsung’s Galaxy XR begins receiving PC Connect for Windows desktop projection, a stabilized Travel Mode for use in motion, and Likeness avatars for video calls, with features rolling out in beta.
  • Google and Xreal demoed Project Aura, a wired XR prototype with roughly a 70-degree field of view and a pocket battery/trackpad, running Android XR apps without rewrites.
  • Google says audio-only glasses and monocular display AI glasses are targeted for 2026 through partners including Warby Parker, Gentle Monster and Samsung, with binocular display models planned for later.
  • Google will support iPhone users via the Gemini iOS app and is building privacy safeguards into glasses including a bright recording indicator and conservative camera and sensor permissions.
