Google Adds 60-Second Vertical Video Summaries to NotebookLM

Google says the feature uses a new fast image model to turn notes into bite-size narrated videos that also preview broader video-generation tools

Overview

  • NotebookLM can now produce Short Video Overviews, roughly 60-second vertical, narrated slideshows that condense user-uploaded notes, documents, images and diagrams into a single clip.
  • Google says the Short format is powered by Nano Banana 2 Lite, officially Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite Image, which the company describes as a faster image-generation model with about four-second render times.
  • Google also put Gemini Omni Flash into public preview for full video generation and conversational editing with features such as relighting, character swaps and native audio sync.
  • The feature will roll out in English for users 18 and older on web, Android and iOS, but reporting conflicts over access remain because some outlets say consumer and Workspace accounts will get it while others say it is limited to paid Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers with daily caps.
  • Google frames the Shorts as a productivity and learning aid for students and professionals, but observers warn the format could encourage over-reliance on compressed summaries and raise risks of AI hallucinations and attention‑span tradeoffs.
