Golijov's Opera on Lorca Premieres at the Met

The flamenco-infused 'Ainadamar' explores the life and legacy of Spanish playwright Federico García Lorca.

Composer Osvaldo Golijov collaborated with playwright David Henry Hwang to create 'Ainadamar,' an opera centered on Federico García Lorca, a Spanish poet and dramatist killed at the onset of the Spanish Civil War.
The opera, which translates to 'fountain of tears,' is staged by Brazilian director Deborah Colker and features a unique blend of flamenco, electronic, and classical music.
The production at the Metropolitan Opera begins on October 15 and includes performances by mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack as Lorca and soprano Angel Blue as Margarita Xirgu.
The opera's innovative staging integrates continuous movement and dance, reflecting Colker's background as a choreographer, with contributions from flamenco choreographer Antonio Najarro.
This staging marks a significant moment for Golijov, whose past commission with the Met was canceled, as he continues to engage with new projects and compositions.
