The Vegas Golden Knights traded away Reilly Smith, one of their original players, to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a 2024 third-round draft pick.
The trade gives the Golden Knights salary cap space to re-sign some of their unrestricted free agents like Ivan Barbashev and Adin Hill.
The Penguins acquire Smith to address some of their roster issues and questions after missing the playoffs for the first time in 16 years.
Smith had two years left on his contract at $5 million per year.
The deal allows the Golden Knights to make more trades and potentially extend Jonathan Marchessault's contract.
