Overview
- A large section of the Golden Cap cliff collapsed around 12:50 pm on 23 August, sending tonnes of rock onto the beach.
- Video by local resident Chris Gasson captured the collapse, with estimates of displaced material ranging from about 5,000 to 10,000 tonnes and an 80-foot debris mound reported.
- Coastguard teams from Lyme Regis and West Bay and the Lyme Regis lifeboat searched the area and reported no injuries.
- Two fossil hunters initially feared missing were later found safe, and authorities cautioned that further rockfalls are likely.
- Officials warned that debris may cause the tide to cut off the beach more quickly with no safe exit at the Golden Cap end.
