Overview

  • Six orphaned cubs—including two sets of twins and two singles—arrived within a week and now reside at the Auburn facility.
  • Each cub is roughly 5–6 months old, weighs 12–17 pounds and will need to reach about 150–175 pounds before release.
  • The cubs were orphaned after mothers were killed by vehicle collisions or removed following human–bear conflicts in Tahoe, Redding, Shasta and Placer counties.
  • GCWR is one of only three California centers authorized by the Department of Fish and Wildlife to rehabilitate black bear cubs in partnership with the Bear League.
  • The rescue operates almost entirely on public donations to cover soaring food, medical and housing needs as the cubs grow.
