Authorities will route administration through South Goa on an interim basis until district offices and a full-time collector are in place.

Overview

  • The state revenue department issued a notification reconstituting Goa into three districts and formally naming the new unit Kushavati.
  • Kushavati comprises the talukas of Dharbandora, Sanguem, Quepem and Canacona, with Quepem designated as the district headquarters.
  • The South Goa collector will continue to oversee the four talukas during the transition, with additional charges assigned from January 1, 2026 for a phased shift.
  • The government says the district qualifies for the Aspirational Districts framework and will seek central assistance, citing about Rs 15 crore in additional funds and a sizable tribal population.
  • Opposition leaders demanded the committee report and full cost details, and the chief minister pledged to share the report and invite suggestions within days as the state also announced special bus services and road upgrades to improve access to Quepem.
