Overview
- The Union Law Ministry issued a Gazette notification on August 6 that brought the Readjustment of Representation Act into force and sets aside four of Goa’s 40 assembly seats for Scheduled Tribes.
- The Gazette notice does not itself create constituency-level reservation because delimitation, review of population data, draft proposals, a public objections process, and a final state notification remain to be completed.
- A delegation of tribal leaders met Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and asked him to fast-track the remaining steps, and the chief minister reportedly committed to finishing the final notification within about a month.
- The United Tribal Associations Alliance has converted a planned protest into a public convention on August 13 and says it will sustain pressure until the reservation process is formally completed.
- The move changes Goa’s caste politics and could affect the 2027 election by creating four reserved seats for ST candidates while provoking objections from other communities and prompting closer scrutiny of the delimitation and data process.
